“Oh, God, don't let me weaken. Help me to continue on. And when I go down, let me go down like an oak tree felled by a woodsman's ax.

In its March 8, 1954, cover story. Time magazine took note of that prophetic inscription as it profiled the junior Senator from Wisconsin, then at the very height of his political power. For four years he had terrorized the nation with his wild and exaggerated charges that nearly every branch of the Government had been infiltrated by Communists and fellow travelers who were busily doing the Soviet Union's dirty work. In the cold‐war climate of fear that the Senator was exploiting and exacerbating, the careers of many eminent men and women were being destroyed on the basis of hearsay evidence — or no evidence at all — and McCarthy's rampage seemed unstoppable."

I saw the movie Goodnight and Good Luck from 2005 made by George Clooney who actually played Fred Friendly in this movie. I've seen this movie a few times including in the theater when it came out in 2005 and it was about CBS News anchor Edward Murrow, the host of the newscast See It Now. And how they took on Senator Joseph McCarthy who was chairing a committee when Senate Republicans were in the majority from 1953-55, when this committee was investigating Communists in the Federal Government.

Ed Murrow and his staff concluded that Chairman McCarthy was accusing and convicting people they were investigating, based on guilt by association, people who were accused of associating with Communists or Socialists, were automatically labeled as Communists themselves, even if they were just suspected by the McCarthy Committee.

And the Ed Murrow show decided that what Senator McCarthy was doing was wrong and that this had to be reported and be stopped if they can, which is exactly what happened in late 1954. Just after Senate Democrats had won back the majority. And this was controversial of Ed Murrow and See It Now, because back then it was considered wrong for newscasters to take stands on issues, that their job was simply as reporters not commentators.

What Ed Murrow and his staff did was conclude based on what they reported and saw from the McCarthy Committee that it wasn't a matter of opinion in what Senator McCarthy was doing was wrong, but that Senator McCarthy was in fact wrong and what he was doing was so wrong, that he had to be stopped. That it was simply Un-American to label people for who and who they might of associated with, either now or in the past, even if they are Communists.

That attacking people or trying to punish people for who they simply have associated with or may have associated with is wrong and that people should be judged by what they do and say, not what they may believe. Or who they may have associated with. And this wasn't easy for Ed Murrow, because he was not only taking on a powerful Senator and Member of Congress in Joe McCarthy but he was taking on his own bosses at CBS News who didn't believe newscasters should be editorializing.

Without Ed Murrow and See It Now maybe Joe McCarthy would've bombed out on his own and either the Senate. Or the country would've caught on, on their own. But the media especially the TV media wasn't as powerful back then as it is today and See It Now was the only show that was covering this story on a regular basis and had decided that what Senator McCarthy was doing, was not only wrong but needed to be stopped.

Jack Paar Show: Robert F. Kennedy: March 13th, 1964

"Friday, March 13, 1964 -- Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy makes his first public appearance since the assassination of his brother, President John F. Kennedy, which occurred exactly sixteen weeks earlier (on November 22, 1963).

RFK elected to make his first post-assassination public appearance on "The Jack Paar Program". The studio audience, as expected, gave Bobby a lengthy standing ovation.

Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, a few months after his brother President John Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, goes on NBC's the Jack Parr Show. I guess he wanted to get back to living a normal life, or as normal of a life that a public official can have in America and get out of the funk he was in from losing his brother and did it in a big way by going on Jack Parr and trying to communicate to the world that he and his family were doing okay, or as well as they could be doing after seeing one of their family members assassinated. 

Bobby Kennedy came back in a big way in 1964. RFK wanted to make his life worth serving again the only way he knew how outside of his family by serving the public and being involved in public affairs. He was already Attorney General of the United States, but had other interests as well.

As Attorney General, RFK was influential in getting the 1964 Civil Rights Act through Congress. His speech at the 1964 Democratic National Convention, resigning from office right after that and running for U.S. Senate in New York. Where he wins there, partially thanks to President Johnson's landslide victory over Barry Goldwater with New York being one of those States. 

Bobby Kennedy not only came back in 1964, but came back in a big public way that few other people would've been able to come back from after a tragedy. Like losing a sibling in the manner that he did. 

The Jack Paar Show, was perfect for RFK because Jack was a very funny man, but also up to date on current affairs and interested in them. And was Bobby Kennedy being a Kennedy with their famous wit and intelligence.

1964, was a very depressing and yet liberating year for Bob Kennedy. First, he was Attorney General, the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the United States, but for a man he hated President Lyndon Johnson, who was President Kennedy's Vice President. LBJ, not exactly best friends with RFK, but at least he let the Attorney General do his job. Unlike RFK who was always undermining any authority and responsibility that LBJ had as Vice President. But that is really a different discussion and perhaps debate, especially for RFK loyalists. 

RFK, didn't want to work for President Johnson and that is one reason why he decided to run for the Senate in 1964. And restore some freedom over his own personal life and career. And going on Jack Paar in early 1964, was the start of RFK returning to public life again.

James Pamela: Jim Morrison & The Doors: Toronto, Ontario, Canada (1968)

Jim Morrison and The Doors, also performed in Toronto, Ontario in 1967. So I guess they were popular at least in the part of Canada. 

The Toronto performance really looked like a hippie fest with the hall being filled with hippie chicks, with very young women dancing in cages just above The Doors. Jim Morrison didn't consider himself a hippie and I don't know if other members of The Doors did either, but they were certainly part of that generation and were part of the times. 

Break on Through is a classic, classic rock song and certainly part of the 1960s and represented that decade so well as an anti-establishment decade with so many young adults in America looking for an alternative lifestyle from which they were raised in the 1950s and 1960s. 

Jim Morrison and The Doors, (at least as I call them) were not a hippie band, but they certainly were an anti-establishment band and a band that represented this decade so well and wanting to deliver a message and lifestyle that simply seemed foreign to most Americans who either remember World War II as kids, or were part of that generation that served. 

U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy: Eulogy of Robert F. Kennedy (1968)

“Your Eminences, Your Excellencies, Mr. President:

On behalf of Mrs. Kennedy, her children, the parents and sisters of Robert Kennedy, I want to express what we feel to those who mourn with us today in this Cathedral and around the world.

We loved him as a brother, and as a father, and as a son. From his parents, and from his older brothers and sisters — Joe and Kathleen and Jack — he received an inspiration which he passed on to all of us. He gave us strength in time of trouble, wisdom in time of uncertainty, and sharing in time of happiness. He will always be by our side.

Love is not an easy feeling to put into words. Nor is loyalty, or trust, or joy. But he was all of these. He loved life completely and he lived it intensely.

A few years back, Robert Kennedy wrote some words about his own father which expresses [sic] the way we in his family felt about him. He said of what his father meant to him, and I quote…

Imagine being in Ted Kennedy’s position right there in 1968: you are 36 years old and you are giving the eulogy of one of your older brothers Robert. You’ve already lost two older brothers, one you barely knew to World War II and the second who also happened to be President of the United States and you lose him to an assassination almost 5 years before you lose your brother Robert.

If you Ted Kennedy here, are considered to be the weakest link, a bit of a dumbass (if you will)  and immature of the Kennedy sons and not someone who is considered to up for a task like this, but it’s given to you because you are seen as the only one who is even capable of handling it. And yet you go up to the plate like you are at Fenway Park playing for the Red Sox in game 7 of the world series and you are down 2 runs in the ninth inning and knock it out of the park to win the series.

Under ridiculous pressure that’s exactly what Ted Kennedy did here for his brother Bobby. We never know how strong we really are in life until we are tested and put under intense pressure where the only choice is to fail or succeed. At Bobby Kennedy’s eulogy, his brother Ted delivered a World Series caliber home run and gave not just one of the best speeches of his life, but speeches that has ever been given anywhere.

Adlai Stevenson running on what would later be known as the Great Society in the LBJ Administration. He wanted to expand the safety net in America and perhaps even go further than the Great Society and social insurance and even create America's first welfare state. Where the Federal Government would become primarily responsible for taking care of the welfare and well-being of the people. Which is what the New-Left of the late 1960s and early 1970s wanted to create in America.

But when Adlai ran for president in 1952 and 56, he was basically running on what would be called the Great Society. Government guaranteed health insurance for the elderly and the poor. And more Welfare for people who were struggling in America.

There wasn't ever any real shot of Adlai defeating a very popular Army General in Dwight Eisenhower who commanded allied forces in Europe and defeat General Eisenhower for president in 1952. Or much of an opportunity for Adlai to defeat a popular president in Dwight Eisenhower in 1956.

What I believe was the real motivation for Adlai running for president in 1952 was to expand the progressive movement and to give Progressives real issues and policies to run on against then Vice President Richard Nixon in 1960. And in that case Adlai's 1956 presidential campaign was pretty successful. Because then Senator Jack Kennedy ran on those social insurance and economic issues when he ran for president in 1960 and defeated Vice President Nixon.

A good pitching matchup for game 1 with Jerry Reuss going for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Ron Guidry going for the New York Yankees. Both teams needed good pitching to be successful in this series, because both clubs were loaded offensively with the Dodgers having Reggie Smith, Dusty Baker, Steve Garvey, Ron Cey, and others. And the Yankees having Reggie Jackson, Dave Winfield, Bob Watson, Craig Nettles, and others. So this looked like it would be a great World Series and going in. And in many way it was a good World Series.

Rage Underground: 'Guerrilla Resistance - Symbionese Liberation Army'

The granddaughter of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst and great-granddaughter of millionaire George Hearst, she gained notoriety in 1974 when, following her kidnapping by the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), she ultimately joined her captors in furthering their cause."

The Symbionese Liberation Army (or SLA for short) was a socialist political cult based in Northern California in the early and mid 1970s, that set down to bring down American capitalism. Which is a big reason why they kidnapped Patty Hearst who later became part of the SLA herself and bought their propaganda and so- forth and was even part of their operations and through her free will, not by force she bought into what they were trying to accomplish. 

Patrica Hearts goes from being a kidnapped victim in early 1974, to criminal by later in 1974 or by 1975. And she was only originally kidnapped because she's the daughter of Randolph Hearst, the multi- millionaire. (Perhaps billionaire in today's money) And the SLA saw Randolph Hearst as part of the problem, working for corporate America to hold average Americans down and one thing that they were trying to accomplish. 

The SLA, was to not just collect ransom from Mr. Hearst for his daughter Patty but to get extort other money from him to be used to take care of the under served in America. The SLA were Marxist Socialists/Communists, who saw American capitalism as a threat to the country and that corporate America needed to be taken down and that our country needed to start over and start a new American revolution, that was socialist, not liberal democratic.

The SLA actually did some good things, like put together food and clothing drives for the needy. The problem is they did it all through extortion. They were the classic rob Peter to pay for Paul and they were criminals, terrorists even that would attack people, including robbing banks. So they could take care of people who were left behind in society and would've been much better off. And the country would've been much better off if they were community organizers, who served the under served in America or had gotten involved in real progressive politics. Not regressive, communist, revolutionary politics.
