Soccer Mavn: MISL 1980- Cleveland Force @ Philadelphia Fever: 12/22/1979

Source:Soccer Mavn- the Cleveland Force vs the Philadelphia Fever, from 1979.

"Action from the second season of the Major Indoor Soccer League finds the Cleveland Force playing the Philadelphia Fever at the Spectrum on December 22, 1979.

MISL finalists in the league's inaugural season, this edition of the Fever found itself augmented by a number of players from the NASL's Philadelphia Fury, such as goalkeeper Bob Rigby.  These additions joined holdover stars Fred Grgurev, Joey Fink, and Eddie Sheridan.

Cleveland featured West Ham United and Portland Timbers star Clive Best.

Three nights earlier, the Fever hung on to win in overtime over the upstart St. Louis Steamers.  Still dragging from that effort, the Fever nevertheless managed to grab a 3-1 win over Cleveland.

A quirky fact: the Fever finished 3-0 against Cleveland in 1979-80, with a different goalkeeper (Rigby (in relief) in this match; Woody Hartman (who started this game) and Matt Kennedy in the other two) getting a win each time.

Play-by-play is by longtime Phillies announcer Andy Musser.  Analysis by US National Team coach Walter Chyzowych.  Ex-Atoms star Derek Trevis is interviewed along the way.  Broadcast on the old PRISM network."

Pro indoor soccer goes back to the late 1970s in America.
